A friction burn is a form of abrasion caused by the friction of skin rubbing against a surface. A friction burn may also be referred to as skinning , chafing , or a term named for the surface causing the burn such as rope burn , carpet burn or rug burn. Because friction generates heat , extreme cases of chafing may result in genuine burning of the outer layers of skin. The dermal papillae may be exposed after top layers of the dermis stratum corneum , stratum granulosum , stratum spinosum and stratum basale have been removed. This is often uncomfortable and even painful, but rarely results in bleeding. A person's own skin or the skin of another person may be sufficient to act as an abrasive surface to cause friction burn. More commonly, friction with abrasive surfaces, including clothing, carpet, or rope, can lead to a friction burn.

He sighted it up and down, shifted his weight, and scanned the length of the street staring down the barrel of his index finger. This happened to be a pleasant neighborhood, tinseled and bright for the holidays. Fathers shoveled the walks with a proud sense of purpose.
To find the full background of the slang word jerk, we must await the next volume of the Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, coming in , but to learn how that word is used in the American dialect -- and where it began -- we are now blessed with Volume Three I to O of the Dictionary of American Regional English DARE , coming out this month, edited by America's lexicographical giant, Fred Cassidy, now 89, with Joan Houston Hall. In , a student of superstition and religion, Herbert Mayo, back-formed the noun from the old verb to apply to the vigorous movement of the heads of those manifesting religious ecstasy: ''I have seen all denominations of religion exercised by the jerks. Railroaders, especially in Pennsylvania, also used the verb to coin jerkwater town, from the scooping of water from the track pan a trough between the tracks in a town too small for a train stop.
